Cats and Local Bird Populations
One person called into the Sanctuary and said all cats should be
exterminated because they kill birds. Michael asked the lady if she ate
chicken or turkey and her answer was yes. He then asked her to think
about whether or not she felt these farm animal birds were less sacred
than the ones some cats kill.
Did you know the human race,
according to bird experts,
kills more birds with pesticides,
accidentally just by using windows and gluttony of the
American people. In fact
over 10 billion farm animals are tortured and
killed each year in this country
alone.
Cat overpopulation can be
responsible for the decline of certain bird breeds in an area.
It's all the more reason to spay and neuter. If you have an outdoor cat,
adding a bell to it's collar warns birds that a cat is in the area.
If you enjoy birds in your yard and
feed them on a regular basis,
try to keep the seed up off the ground. Not only will this keep your
feathery friends up high out of cats' reach, seed that has been left on
the ground can develop bacterial growth that can be harmful or fatal if
ingested.
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
It
takes love to help relieve the suffering of animals.
Unfortunately, it also takes a lot of money. Several people in the past
have donated very large sums of money, greatly aiding our cause. We are
hoping that someone who is in a situation to help like this will learn
of a way we have found to bring in a monthly steady income. It involves
the purchase of the building we now have our Thrift Store in and the
donation of that building to LTFAS. This donation would create a
self-generating income for the Sanctuary, which is a non-profit tax
exempt organization. This gift would be tax deductible, would create
jobs, and would allow the Sanctuary to expand, benefiting the community
and allowing us to work more closely with local shelters ..
As a way of encouraging our community
to take action against feral overpopulation and increase the quality of
life
for ferals in general, we are offering assistance in
providing food for the ferals to individuals who take it upon themselves
to take them in and get them altered as well as any other medical care
that may be needed for the animal's well-being.
Humane
traps are available for loan from the Sanctuary to catch feral cats for
this purpose. Please contact the Sanctuary for more information.
